Lime plastering and rendering

Lime plaster is the oldest building material and technique still used today. It’s found in many buildings built before the early 1900s. If your property was originally constructed that way, you must use lime in any restorations.

Lime allows a structure to breathe as it is porous and flexible, allowing water to escape from the building. It’s healthier for your property and for you as it’s made from natural materials.

Building with lime is a relatively simple process but it needs understanding and skilled application. We usually mix our own render and plaster on-site and use locally sourced aggregates, lime putty and quicklime.

We can also incorporate hemp or similar products into our render and plaster. This produces material with good insulating properties without compromising on the superior aesthetics of lime plastering or render.

    Lime Pointing

Lime pointing is a traditional style of pointing using lime mortar made from either lime putty or hot lime never hydraulic lime (NHL).

As part of the process, we remove non-permeable and damaging cement pointing and replace it with lime mortar pointing. It is all colour matched to the original underlying lime mortar. The benefit of this process means the masonry is allowed to breathe and dry out, and the appearance is improved no end. It makes a huge difference.

      Knapped Flint Work

Knapped flint work is a common construction method in South and East England. We can repair existing flint work and build new structures and walls from scratch. A sustainable and traditional skill that we are proud to keep alive.

        Wattle and Daub

Wattle and daub is a very common, traditional infill. It’s recognised by the appearance of irregular panels that are usually plastered and painted. Wattle spars are built to form a matrix that supports a earth-based daub.

Using seasoned hazel spars and split hazel for the weave, we replicate this ancient and traditional style of building usually associated with timber-framed houses and cottages.

          Lime Washing

Limewashing is a traditional type of paint made from natural lime. It continues to be used on many heritage properties today and is a natural alternative to modern-day paint. It can be colour matched using pigment.

We have developed our own limewash recipe, which is an amazing coating. It performs exceptionally well, both in increasing capillary action to pull damp out of the substrate and aesthetically providing a powerful and versatile colour palette.

            Chalk Cob

Traditional cob buildings and structures are found in the West Country and through out South England. It’s a way of building using chalk and sometimes straw. We work on chalk cob structures, including cottages and walls.

Whatever issue you have with your cob construction from repairs to existing structures to new builds we will have the solution. Have a look at our gallery to see how we have dealt with serious problems involving collapsing and failed cob structures.
